    Description

Imperial German, Great War, Hauptmann/Rittmeister Cavalry Officer’s Shoulder Boards from the Kingdom of Prussia. My research indicates that this Captain served in either a Hussar or Ulan Regiment. In peacetime the Imperial German Army was organized as 25 Corps, each of which had 2 Divisions. Each Division included a Cavalry Brigade of 2 Regiments that were numbered as their parent Division with the following exceptions: Guard Corps had 4 Cavalry Brigades organized as the Guards Cavalry Division, the only peacetime Cavalry Division in the German Army. The Leib Hussar Brigade was assigned to the 36th Division and there was no 36th Cavalry Brigade. 3 Corps had an extra Cavalry Brigade. This gave a total of 55 Brigades and 110 Regiments of Cavalry. When the war bogged down into trench warfare early in the war, Cavalry, Ulan, Hussar, Dragoon’s & Lancers were not in great demand. When the war bogged down all classes of mounted troops were hardly necessary in how the war progressed. By the end of the war just 22 Cavalry Regiments remained mounted, 1/5th of the active Regiments mobilized in 1914.
